Friends reflect on life of longtime Dothan photographer Art Solomon

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — If you have gotten your picture taken in the Circle City there's a chance it was taken by Art Solomon.

He passed away at his home late Sunday night after a nearly three-year battle with glioblastoma, a cancer that starts in the brain

During his 73 years of life, Solomon left an impact on everyone he met.

"People take a passion in what they do and Art Solomon had a great passion for his photography," Tournament Coordinator for the Future Masters, Angelia Turner. "There are probably not many families in Dothan that hadn't been touched by his photography skills and what he loved doing."

Known for owning his photography studio in the Circle City, Solomon also was a mainstay on the golf course as the official photographer for the Future Masters in Dothan for 38 years before retiring in 2022.

During each tournament, Solomon would grab photos of each contestant when they teed off on day one and would give them their developed photo the next day when awards were handed out.

"Ms. Thornton, 40 years ago ran into a tight and needed a photographer to come in and fill in at the last minute and he jumped right in," Turner said.

When he was not snapping photos for thousands to hold on for years, Solomon could be seen volunteering with the National Peanut Festival. He also served as president of the organization in 1985.

"He just really in my opinion helped make the festival the organization and all that it is today," NPF President for 2022 and 2023, Frances Cook said. "He was one of the main people that did that."

Last year, during his battle with cancer Soloman served as the Grand Marshal of the Peanut Festival Parade

"I said well Art will you be my Grand Marshal in 2023 and he said, 'Well Frances, I think I will stick around for that.' and he did," Cook said. "He was so honored and so appreciative of being chosen."

A service is scheduled for next Monday at the First Methodist Church of Dothan to honor Solomon's life.
