Columbus Consolidated Government announces proposed property tax increase

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — The Consolidated Government of Columbus announced on Tuesday its intention to increase property taxes for a district within the city.

If the proposal goes through, Urban Services District #2 would see a 4.25% increase.

The tentative budget requires a millage rate higher than the rollback millage rate. Under Georgia law, three public hearings must be held to give citizens a chance to express their opinions before the increase goes through.

The hearings will be at the Council Chambers in the City Services Center at these times:

  • Tuesday, June 4 at 9 a.m.
  • Tuesday, June 4 at 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday, June 11 at 9 a.m.

According to the city, Columbus is divided into three districts: a General Services District and two Urban Services Districts. Urban Services District #1 is mostly developed land while #2 is primarily undeveloped land in the northern and eastern portions of the city.
