Criminal street gang task force unit to begin operations in Columbus

ATLANTA, Ga. (WRBL) — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is bringing a criminal street gang task force to Columbus.

The nine-person unit aims to help local law enforcement combat criminal street gangs. The General Assembly is allocating about $5 million to this West Georgia unit.

GBI Director Chris Hosey says that funding for the unit starts flowing in July.

“You know, we've stood up projects like this in other locations across the state of Georgia. We put one in Macon just this past year," said Hosey. "We've been in meetings since the very onset of this, and I think we have established and carried our continued great partnerships with Columbus Police Department, Muscogee County Sheriff's Office and all the local agencies that surround there.”

The GBI is still working to secure a location. Agents for the office are being identified.

The unit should begin operations by the end of the year. Hosey hopes the unit will send a strong message.

“We're there to protect the citizens of Columbus and Muskogee County and surrounding areas. And I think the message will be strong," said Hosey. "We're going to go we're going to come and do our job. We're going to work with our local partners, like I mentioned, state, local, federal in that area of the state like we have in other areas of the state. Simply put, we're going to come and do our job.”

The entire interview with Director Hosey can be seen this week on News 3 Sunday morning beginning at 8 a.m.
