Phoebe Sumter to host fresh produce giveaway

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — A community-wide collaboration is bringing healthy and fresh produce to Southwest Georgia.

Healthy Sumter will take place this Saturday, April 19 at 11:00 a.m. at the former National Guard Armory in Americus.

The health initiative was designed to improve the wellness of Sumter County and SW Georgia residents. A main goal for the Healthy Sumter event is to eliminate food deserts and provide fresh fruits and vegetables to areas that might not have them easily available.

According to a 2024 study done by Feeding America, nearly 8 out of 10 food insecurities are in the South and 9 out of 10 food insecurity counties are rural. This event, along with many others in SW Georgia, are taking an aim at the various food insecurities and food deserts that Georgians face.

The produce giveaway this weekend will be available at no cost for local citizens and will continue as long as supplies last.
