AUBURN, Ala. (WRBL) - Drivers in west Georgia and east Alabama are heading into the July 4th holiday weekend with some of the lowest gas prices in the country.
In Columbus, Georgia regular unleaded is down to $2.65, while Auburn, Alabama stations are posting prices as low as $2.54. Alabama’s statewide average sits at $2.79, well below the national average of $3.14. Diesel prices in Alabama range from $2.64 to $3.26, depending on location — a reminder it pays to shop around.
According to GasBuddy, the national average dropped 3.8 cents this week — the first decline in three weeks — and is now 32 cents lower than it was a year ago. Analysts say falling oil prices and easing global tensions are fueling the drop, and gas could hit its lowest July 4th average since 2021.

Though recent events have caused some turmoil and volatility in energy markets, gas prices have returned to decline due to cooling Middle East geopolitical tensions and increased oil production from OPEC in recent months. Crude oil prices have tumbled nearly $10 in the last week, and U.S. refinery activity is up. If conditions hold, experts say the national average could dip below $3 per gallon later this summer.
