Jerrold Tarog will not be part of Jane de Leon's Darna: The TV series

Film director Jerrold Tarog, the director of Star Cinema’s Darna movie, will not direct the TV series starring Jane de Leon.

He confirmed this in a tweet dated January 13, 2021, after a netizen asked if he will be a part of the TV series’ production.

The netizen asked (published as is), “Hey @JerroldTarog! Are you still attached to the Darna series? Since we didn't got any information if the same creative team is still attached.”

According to Jerrold, “scheduling conflicts” is the reason why he won’t be involved in the TV series.

However, there is a chance that he will still be a part of ABS-CBN’s other plans for the “Ravelo universe.”

Jerrold replied, “Unfortunately, I'm not going to be involved in the TV series due to scheduling conflicts. But some doors remain open regarding my future involvement in the Ravelo universe.

"We will see. For now, I wish ABS-CBN & @Imjanedeleon all the best. Let's continue to support them.”

Jerrold was tapped to direct Darna: The Movie when its original director, Erik Matti, backed out of the project.

At that time, Liza Soberano was already chosen to replace Angel Locsin in the movie.

When Jane was chosen to play the lead role, Jerrold was able to shot at least 16 sequences before the lockdown.

JANE DE LEON’S DARNA: FROM A POSTPONED MOVIE TO A TV SERIES

On August 17, 2020, PEP.ph reported that the Darna movie had been shelved.

According to information received by PEP.ph from another reliable showbiz insider, the cancellation was a “business decision” of Star Cinema, a subsidiary of ABS-CBN Films, the network’s film arm.

The same insider revealed that ABS-CBN had offered the rights to film Darna as a TV series to other networks, particularly TV5 and GMA-7.

ABS-CBN said in a statement on August 21 that Star Cinema has decided to postpone the filming of Darna.

The statement also mentioned that “complex logistics, crowd shots, and fight scenes that involve physical contact” will be hard to mount while complying with the restrictions set due to COVID-19.

However, the Kapamilya network has retained the rights to Darna.

On August 18, 2020, Jane’s co-manager, Tyrone James Escalante, first revealed that ABS-CBN plans to do a series version of Darna.

He told PEP Troika, "May plano na gawing TV series ang Darna sa Kapamilya Channel, pero nothing concrete pa rin po tungkol dito."

On November 26, 2020, PEP.ph reported, with confirmation from an ABS-CBN insider, that Darna will be turned into a TV series.

A movie version is said to be pushing through after the airing of the series.

The series was formally announced on December 4, 2020, the day Jane signed her exclusive contract with ABS-CBN and Star Magic.

Darna: The TV Series is also included in ABS-CBN's lineup of programs for 2021.
