ALABAMA (WRBL) — It's back-to-school season.
If you're looking to save a bit of money while getting ready for the school year, Alabama's tax-free weekend is coming up.
From July 19 to 21, certain items in Alabama can be purchased without sales tax.
According to the City of Auburn, the exemption applies to clothing, school supplies, and computers along with software and supplies.
Clothing items must cost $100 or less to be exempt. For computers and software, a single purchase of $750 or less will be exempt.
As for school supplies, any commonly used student item $50 or less may be exempt. This can include art supplies, maps and globes, textbooks from an official school book list in the $30 to $50 range, and books $30 or under.
The City of Auburn provided this list of items that are not tax exempt:
- Clothing accessories such as handbags, jewelry, sunglasses and umbrellas
- Protective equipment such as breathing masks, hard hats, helmets and safety belts
- Sports or recreational equipment such as ballet or tap shoes, athletic gloves, goggles or shin guards
- Furniture
- Any systems, devices, software or peripherals designed or intended primarily for recreational use
- Video games of a non-educational nature
- Magazines, newspapers, periodicals or any other document printed or offered for sale in a non-bound form
Anyone looking to shop in downtown Auburn can park for free on July 19. The city says this does not apply to the Wright Street Parking Deck.
