ATLANTA, Ga. (WJBF) — All eyes are on the peach state once again as Vice President Kamala Harris spoke to small business owners and voters in Savannah on Thursday. It was part of a two day tour focusing in on the ground game by connecting to voters to help flip the state blue like the 2020 elections. On the other side of the aisle, Georgia Republicans are putting on a strong united front despite a recent spat between governor Brian Kemp and Republican nominee Donald Trump.
Governor Kemp co-hosted a private fundraiser dinner in Atlanta Thursday night to rally up Georgia's Republican base. Governor Kemp said he’s focused on flipping the state back to red after former President Donald Trump lost by about 12,000 votes in the 2020 election.
“Party is party and they are both republicans. It is not surprising that governor kemp would support a fellow republican in this race. All else being equal to win the presidency as opposed to Kamala Harris," said Political Science professor at Emory University, Andra Gillespie.
When Trump rallied in Atlanta earlier this month, he slammed Governor Kemp calling him “disloyal, a bad guy and an average governor” blaming the governor for his loss in Georgia. The two have since mended fences.
While Governor Kemp and former president Donald Trump may not see eye-to-eye on certain things, they both stand clear against the Biden-Harris administration. They say due to 40 year inflation and their failed policies, they need to have Republicans win and enter the White House this November.
“Do I think they will be best friends - probably not and others have said the same thing. But other people have said the same thing that owing to the fact they are both republicans and loyal to the party,” said Gillespie.
Political experts say the path to the White House is through Georgia.
"Many people suspect he has his eye on Jon Ossoff's Senate seat in 2026 and he wouldn’t want to alienate a crucial part of his republican base and to that victory so it makes sense to make amends with Trump," said Gillespie.
However – earlier during the May primary Governor Kemp confirmed he did not vote for Trump.
