Human skeletal remains discovered in Opelika woods, investigation ongoing

OPPELIKA, Ala. (WRBL) – Human skeletal remains were discovered Saturday afternoon in a wooded area across from the Walmart Distribution Center in Opelika. The remains were found by a person who told police they had been searching for a deer they struck with their truck.

Opelika police responded to the scene, securing the area and beginning a search for additional remains. We are told the remains were about 200 yards off Interstate 85 and Northpark Drive. Monday morning, a cadaver dog joined in on the search. So far, no additional remains have been located.

Investigators say any remains found will be sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. Forensic experts will work to determine the individual’s sex, age, potential cause of death, and identity.
