State of emergency declared to help Sumter County officials manage Jimmy Carter's final farewell

SUMTER COUNTY, Ga. (WRBL)Former President Jimmy Carter passed away at his Plains home on Sunday. In preparation for his final farewell, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has declared a state of emergency for Sumter County.

According to Kemp's office, the amount of people expected to visit rural, small-town Plains will "exceed the management capacity of local governments." All state resources will be made available to aid with Carter's services, the office says.

International and domestic visitors alike are anticipated to visit Plains to pay their respects over the coming weeks. This influx could impact Georgia citizens living or traveling in the area.

The executive order began on Dec. 29 and will end at 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 12.

Details about the final arrangements that include events in Atlanta, Washington, and Plains have not been released at this time.
