LANETT, Ala. (WRBL) — In the early hours of Saturday December 28, 2024, Lanett Police responded to reports of gunshots in the 2400 block of 16th Avenue Southwest. Upon arrival, officers discovered a vehicle with a shattered driver’s side rear window, initiating an investigation into a chaotic sequence of events.
Investigators say the suspects had broken into two vehicles before entering a residence through a window. Inside the home, the homeowner confronted one of the suspects, resulting in a struggle and the discharge of a firearm. The suspects ran away, leaving behind a firearm and a pink Nike backpack. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The incident is now being investigated as a burglary in the first degree and attempted murder.
Investigators identified the abandoned firearm as one previously reported stolen during a series of vehicle break-ins in the Cahaba Springs housing project. Video evidence from the Cahaba Springs incident shows suspects involved in the thefts, including one individual carrying a pink Nike backpack.
Evidence recovered at the scene, including the firearm and other materials, has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for DNA analysis.
Still photos of two suspects connected to the Cahaba Springs incident have been released. Authorities warn these individuals are considered armed and dangerous. The Lanett Police Department urges anyone with information regarding the suspects' identities or whereabouts to contact Investigator Reagan or Central Alabama Crime Stoppers.
