Ebe Dancel, Gloc-9, Noel Cabangon recognized at first SUDI Awards

Ebe Dancel, Gloc-9, and Noel Cabangon are among the country's top musicians who were recently recognized at the SUDI Awards by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

Taking its name from an Ilokano adjective that means "illustrious," "renowned," "celebrated," or "famous," the SUDI Awards recognizes the most outstanding achievements of 20 musicians who have defined the past decades.

The winners are divided into two decades: 2000 to 2009 and 2010 to 2020.

The winners for the years 2000-2009 are: Prof. Benicio Sokkong; Prof. Carmencita Guanzon Arambulo; 98.7 DZFE-FM “The Master’s Touch”; Mr. Gary Granada; Dr. Grace Nono; Mr. José Iñigo Homer Lacambra Ayala; Loboc Children’s Choir; Prof. Josefino Toledo; Dr. Raul Sunico, and UP Singing Ambassadors.

Meanwhile, the musicians conferred in the years 2010-2020 are: Acapellago; Ateneo Chamber Singers; Mr. Vincent Ferdinand Dancel a.k.a Ebe Dancel; Mr. Gerard Salonga; Mr. Aristotle Pollisco a.k.a Gloc-9; Mr. Jonathan Manalo; Mr. Noel Cabangon; Rak of Aegis; Philippine Madrigal Singers, and The 70’s Bistro Bar.

Eight special citations are given to the following musicians and festivals: Akapela Open; Elements Music Camp; Philpop MusicFest Foundation; Pinoy Playlist Music Festival; Bayanihan Musikahan; Mr. Bob Aves; Prof. Danongan Sibay Kalanduyan, and Route 196.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE SUDI AWARDS

The awardees were carefully deliberated and selected by the 2020 NCCA SUDI Awards board of jury composed of Bobby Barreiro, Andre Allan Alvarez, Maria Rachelle Gerodias, Francis Reyes, Lutgardo Labad, Christian Bautista, Dr. Felipe De Leon, Jr. Dr. Elena Mirano, Melchor Villena, Dr. Jose Buenconsejo.

National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab served as chairman for the awards.

The SUDI Awards was initiated by the technical working group of NCCA, chaired by Mr. Noel Ferrer, under the recommendation of former NCCA chairman and National Artist for Literature Dr. Virgilio Almario.

The members of its technical working group were National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab, NCCA National Committee on Music head Dr. Felipe de Leon, Jr., Organisasyon Ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit and Philpop executive director Dinah Remolacio, Elements Music Camp founder Twinky Lagdameo, Homonym founder and managing director Mike Constantino, and Filipino world music artist Bayang Barrios.

SUDI AWARDS IN THE NEW NORMAL

According to NCCA's website, the SUDI Awards is a National Music award-giving body that “aims to recognize outstanding contributions of Filipino musical works, creators, institutions, and researchers across genres and modes of productions with the highest standard and artistic excellence.”

The name SUDI was proposed by Dr. Felipe M. De Leon, Jr., member of the technical working group and incumbent head of the NCCA National Committee on Music.

The awarding ceremony, which will feature melodic and symphonic activities, is set to be streamed over NCCA social media accounts this 2021.

NCCA, however, has yet to announce the final date of the ceremony.
