NORMAL, Ala. (WHNT) — A spokesperson for Alabama A&M University's athletic department said a football player who was injured during the Magic City Classic football game is still alive, apologizing for an earlier statement saying he had died.
Medrick Burnett Jr., a linebacker for the Bulldogs, was carted off the field during the Magic City Classic on October 26 after an injury.
On Wednesday morning, a spokesman for the school said Burnett died on November 26. A spokesperson later told News 19 they were given false information, and Burnett is alive and remains in stable condition.
"We retract the news of the passing of Medrick Burnett Jr., that was originally advised by an immediate family member on Tuesday evening. Our staff acted accordingly to the wishes of the family member to inform the A&M community and beyond of this unfortunate occurrence. Upon hearing from a representative from UAB hospital this afternoon, we learned that he remains alive. We express our immediate regret for disseminating false information however, we hold complete joy in knowing that Medrick remains in stable condition," the athletic department said in a new statement sent to News 19 Wednesday evening.
Burnett joined the Bulldog family in the summer of 2024 ahead of his redshirt freshman campaign. He was a native of Lakewood, California, where he attended Mayfield High School.
Out of high school, Burnett joined the Grambling State University football program during the 2023 season.
