UPDATE 11/21/24: A verdict has been reached on early Thursday afternoon in the Giles murder case.
Caron Giles was found not guilty on all charges including malice murder and felony murder.
The charges stem back to 2019 when Giles was accused of shooting his 45-year-old mother to death on North Lumpkin Road.
The jury deliberated for just over two hours.
UPDATE 11/20/24 1:44 p.m.: The prosecution rested its case in the Giles murder case just before noon on Wednesday.
Final witness was a CPD detective. He introduced FB messages from the defendant. He said arrest of Giles did come after the ballistics on the gun found under the defendant's bed came back as a murder weapon.
The defense also rested and Giles won't testify in his own defense closing arguments this afternoon. Jury could get the case before end of day.
COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — The trial for a man accused of shooting his mother to death in 2019 is underway in the Columbus Government Center on Tuesday.
Caron Giles is accused of killing his 45-year-old mother, Lachasta Giles, on Oct. 1 in the parking lot of Springfield Crossing Apartments on North Lumpkin Road.
During opening statements, Assistant District Attorney Meghan Bowden said there was DNA and physical evidence tying the then 18-year-old Caron Giles to the murder.
Public defender Angela Dillion said that evidence would not pass the test of reasonable doubt.
Columbus Police bodycam video of the scene and Caron Giles’ actions in front of officers in the shooting’s aftermath was introduced.
Here’s what the two attorneys told a jury that is overwhelming female.
“So, as Mr. Giles sits here today, he has the third thing I want to tell you about the presumption of innocence," said Caron Giles' Defense Attorney Angela Dillion. "Every defendant that walks into this courtroom is presumed innocent until the state overcomes your doubt to prove that they did."
“This defendant's DNA is on the trigger of the gun. Projectile matches. The gun is. DNA is on the trigger," Assistant District Attorney Meghan Bowden said. "There's nobody else that could have shot and killed her that put that gun in that apartment but him.”
The trial is expected to last until the end of the week. Caron Giles has been in custody since February when his bond was revoked.
