GEORGIA (WRBL) — A Columbus native and a taskforce officer with the Georgia Department of Community Supervision was awarded on Tuesday for rescuing three children from a burning vehicle in Phenix City last year.
Cedric Montgomery was honored during the 2024 Governor's Public Safety Awards for his life-saving efforts back in October of 2023.
According to officials, Montgomery was reporting for duty when he found a woman near a burning vehicle. His troublesome discovery worsened when he found her three children trapped inside.
An infant, a four-year-old, and an eight-year-old — as the flames grew, Montgomery began working with the mother and eldest child to free the younger children.
Montgomery used his service weapon to break the back window of the car, where the children were pulled out of the blaze.
EMS arrived to the scene to render aid to the family. Montgomery was taken to a local hospital, treated, and released the same day.
Upon reflecting on his award, Montgomery said “It’s humbling to be recognized, but more importantly, it’s rewarding to know that I helped a family stay together. This is what we sign up for – to be there for those who cannot help themselves.”
The Governor’s Public Safety Award recognizes public safety professionals who go above and beyond.
