PRESTON, Ga. (WRBL) — A health-centric initiative gave away another 120 boxes of fresh produce to the people of Webster County, and that's just a small portion of the impact made this year.
Those boxes distributed by Healthy Sumter contained collards or cabbage, squash, peaches, tomatoes and peppers. They were given out at the Webster County Extension Office.
One-hundred-and-twenty boxes is a lot, but it's also just a drop in the bucket for Healthy Sumter. So far this year, a whopping total of 5,620 boxes have been distributed — that's over 56,000 pounds of produce, and it's reached more than 21,500 people.
The goal? To help with food insecurity across local counties. Other initiatives involve eliminating food deserts with community gardens and teaching locals how to create their own at-home gardens.
The final produce giveaway for 2024 is on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 11 a.m. It'll be at the Emergency Operations Center, formerly the National Guard Armory, over in Americus.
