Auburn graduate identified as victim in New Orleans terror attack

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WDHN) -- A graduate from Auburn University has been identified as one of the 15 victims killed in the New Orleans French Quarter attack on New Year's Day.

On Thursday morning, Auburn University President Christopher Roberts posted to the university's Facebook page, identifying one of the victims as 2023 graduate Drew Dauphin.

"Words cannot convey the sorrow the Auburn Family feels for Drew’s family and friends during this unimaginably difficult time. Our thoughts are with the Dauphin family and the families of all the victims of this senseless tragedy," said President Roberts.

Also among those killed in the attack was University of Alabama student Kareem Badawi.

Kareem, Drew, and 13 others were killed when a rented Ford truck slammed into a crowd of people at the intersection of the famed Bourbon and Iberville streets at around 3:15 a.m. on New Year's.

New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell called the incident a “terrorist attack” during a press conference on Wednesday.

FBI officials claimed the suspect, 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar of Texas, had what appeared to be an ISIS flag on the back of the truck when he allegedly went through the barricades to reach the crowd.

Sources tell WDHN’s sister station in New Orleans, WGNO, that Jabbar was shot and killed by New Orleans Police after an exchange of gunfire.

Following the deadly attack, Alabama politicians and Enterprise natives, Senator Katie Britt and Rep. Barry Moore, called for justice for those killed and called the attack an act of "evil."
