Chambers County inmate found dead in cell, SBI investigating

CHAMBERS COUNTY, Ala. (WRBL) — A 36-year-old inmate at the Chambers County Detention Facility was found unresponsive in her holding cell late Saturday morning, prompting an independent investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).

Detention deputies discovered Leanna Washington, of LaGrange, Georgia, at approximately 11:45 a.m. on January 4. Emergency lifesaving measures were immediately initiated by detention staff and medical personnel, with assistance from Lafayette Fire & EMS. Despite these efforts, Washington was pronounced dead at the scene.

Washington had been booked into the facility on December 28, 2024, following her arrest by the Valley Police Department on drug-related charges. According to the sheriff’s office, no other inmates or detention deputies were involved in the incident.

As standard protocol, Sheriff Jeff Nelson requested the SBI to conduct an independent investigation. All evidence related to the incident has been turned over to investigators.
