FORT STEWART, Ga. (WRBL) — With casualties confirmed at Fort Stewart after reports of an active shooter on Wednesday, Gov. Brian Kemp issued a statement following the tragedy.
The governor took to X (Twitter) and provided his thoughts on the incident.
“As we remain in close contact with law enforcement on the ground, Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart. We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same," Kemp said in the post.
Around 11:40 a.m., Maj. Charles Egan, confirmed an active shooter at Fort Stewart and eventually, it was confirmed that there were casualties in the incident that are still being assessed.
Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield (FSHAA) Commander has issued a lock down in the 2ABCT area.
The lockdown includes Wright and Evans Army Airfield.
FSHAA confirmed through Facebook that Fort Stewart DoDEA schools are on lockdown as well. However, there is no immediate threat to the schools.
WRBL News 3's sister station WSAV, has a crew on the way to the scene.
“Lockdown your facility immediately, stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors. Keep telephone lines open and report accountability to your leadership,” FSHAA said on a Facebook post.
Liberty County Schools in Savannah have been placed on lockdown, including Button Gwinnett Elementary, Joseph Martin Elementary and Snelson Golden Middle School.
Appling County School System was also placed on a Level 1 lockdown and said: “We are closely monitoring the situation and remain in communication with local law enforcement.”
