Celebrities jumping from one network to another is always news in the country's television industry— even when it is no longer a surprise as it happens almost every year.
GMA-7 had its share of departures, but 2020 will be remembered mostly as the year that ABS-CBN lost a record number of stars and news anchors owing to the non-renewal of its franchise in July.
And there were the talents and contract artists who might not have changed networks but decided to switch managers hoping to improve their luck in showbiz.
PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) tracks the movement of stars and talents looking for new opportunities in rival networks or talent-management agencies.
FROM KAPAMILYA TO KAPUSO NETWORK
Most of the artists who transferred to GMA-7 from ABS-CBN this 2020 also signed signed exclusive management contracts with GMA Artist Center.
Among them are headliners Myrtle Sarrosa and Khalil Ramos. The others are Luis Hontiveros, Jose Sarasola, Vito Marquez, and Royce Cabrera.
But the biggest haul of the Kapuso network from Kapamilya is Richard Yap.
Myrtle Sarrosa, the big winner of Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Edition 4, signed an exclusive management contract with GMA-7 on February 21, 2020.
The contract signing happened before ABS-CBN’s franchise expired.
Though still unconfirmed, it's been rumored that Myrtle will be included in GMA-7’s Voltes V: Legacy .
However, without going into details, Myrtle told PEP.ph in her short PEPLive appearance that she will soon start a new Kapuso project.
She recently appeared in an episode of GMA Public Affairs’ drama anthology, Tadhana.
Khalil Ramos, a product of ABS-CBN’s Pilipinas Got Talent in 2011, signed an exclusive management contract with GMA Artist Center on October 13, 2020.
Khalil’s girlfriend, Gabbi Garcia, has been a Kapuso since 2014.
Before transferring to GMA-7, Khalil was a regular in the ABS-CBN series, Make It With You, starring Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil. The series was cut short when ABS-CBN stopped broadcasting free TV.
As a Kapuso, Khalil has joined the cast of GMA-7’s Sunday variety show, All-Out Sundays. He is also set to work with Gabbi in a series titled Love You Stranger.
Richard Yap of Be Careful With My Heart fame signed a contract with GMA-7 on December 16, 2020. He was with ABS-CBN for nine years.
Even before he officially became part of the Kapuso network, Richard appeared in Eat Bulaga’s “Bawal Judgmental” segment on July 11, 2020, which was right after ABS-CBN’s franchise was killed by 70 solons.
Richard is set to appear in Dear Uge Presents and The Boobay and Tekla Show before starting work on his own prime-time series at GMA-7.
the exodus to KAPATID NETWORK
With the expiration of ABS-CBN’s broadcast franchise and the pandemic cutting the network's shows off the air, a list of Kapamilya artists and broadcasters opted for a working arrangement with TV5.
From showbiz—Pokwang, Ria Atayde, Piolo Pascual, Maja Salvador, Alex Gonzaga and Billy Crawford.
From ABS-CBN's news and public affairs department—Ted Failon, DJ Chacha, and Korina Sanchez.
Pokwang and Ria Atayde are the first two Kapamilya artists to be associated with a TV5 program.
Both are hosts of Chika BESH, a daytime talk show produced by Archangel Media.
However, Ria remains to be a talent of Star Magic. In fact, it was Star Magic that recommended Ria for the show.
On the other hand, Pokwang has reportedly left the ABS-CBN talent-management arm.
It is not clear, however, if Pokwang is now a talent of Antonio P. Tuviera. Tuviera is the father of Mike Tuviera, the owner of Archangel Media.
Aside from Chika BESH, Pokwang is part of another Archangel show Fill In The Bank.
Piolo Pascual and Maja Salvador were both regular cast members of ASAP Natin ‘To.
Both of them still appeared in ASAP when it resumed airing via the Kapamilya Channel on June 13, 2020.
Piolo appeared on a regular basis while Maja was a semi-regular until September 2020.
At the time, it was bruited about that Piolo was set to join former ASAP director Johnny Manahan, known as Mr. M, in TV5's Sunday noontime show Sunday Noontime Live (SNL).
The show is produced by Brightlight Productions, a blocktimer.
Meanwhile, Maja also announced in an Instagram post that she had decided to join Mr. M in the TV5 show.
Jake Ejercito, Donny Pangilinan, Maris Racal, and Jerome Ponce are also some of the Kapamilya stars who are visible in the program.
All the cast members of SNL, however, said that they remain “Kapamilya by heart.” In fact, Piolo is slated to do a concert produced by ABS-CBN in 2021.
The other ABS-CBN stars who currently appear on TV5 are Beauty Gonzalez, RK Bagatsing, and Jane Oineza for I Got You; Ian Veneracion, Sue Ramirez, and Dimples Romana for Oh My Dad; Ritz Azul, Miles Ocampo, and Josh Colet for Sunday Kada; Ejay Falcon and Matt Evans for Paano Ang Pasko?; and Aga Muhlach, Matteo Guidicelli, Cristine Reyes, and Kim Molina in Masked Singer Pilipinas.
Billy Crawford also decided to transfer to TV5 and leave It’s Showtime, where he was a judge of the contest “Tawag ng Tanghalan.”
Billy now hosts TV5's Masked Singer Pilipinas and its noontime show Lunch Out Loud.
Alex Gonzaga left her two regular shows in ABS-CBN: I Can See Your Voice and Pinoy Big Brother to join Billy as co-host of Lunch Out Loud.
The other Kapamilya artists in the show include Wacky Kiray, Bayani Agbayani, and K Brosas.
Ted Failon bid goodbye to ABS-CBN, his home for 30 years, on August 30, 2020.
He was for the longest time a part of TV Patrol.
On September 11, Ted inked a contract with TV5’s radio arm, Radyo 5.
Ted was joined by MOR 101.9 disc jockey DJ Cha Cha, Ted’s partner in the defunct DZMM program Failon Ngayon.
Korina Sanchez also left ABS-CBN and is now hosting the magazine program Rated Korina, which is produced by Brightlight Productions for TV5.
Korina hosted the magazine show, Rated K, her only show in the Kapamilya network for many years until its shutdown.
KAPUSO TALENTS ON NET 25
Net 25 has also decided to strengthen its entertainment programs this 2020.
This gave more opportunities for industry workers and celebrities who lost jobs owing to the pandemic and the shutdown of ABS-CBN.
So far, only Anjo Yllana from GMA-7 has made a major move to Net 25.
In August 2020, Anjo chose to leave GMA-7 and TAPE, Inc.’s noontime show, Eat Bulaga! to become part of Net 25's Happy Time, which also airs at noontime.
So, it’s more of my family."
Anjo’s co-hosts in Happy Time are Janno Gibbs and Kitkat.
On the other hand, Ruru Madrid and Jon Lucas—who are both members of Iglesia Ni Cristo, which owns Net 25—have also done guest appearances.
The other celebrities who are now part of Net 25's programs are freelancers like Vina Morales and Robin Padilla.
MANAGEMENT TRANSFERS
Some celebrities opted to change the management agencies that have been handling their careers.
They are Kris Bernal, Bea Alonzo, Julia Barretto, Diego Loyzaga, and McCoy de Leon.
Kris Bernal did a guest appearance in TV5’s talk show, Chika BESH in September 2020. In a vlog post, she revealed that she was no longer with GMA Artist Center.
Although she still made appearances in GMA-7 after her announcement, she eventually accepted a project with TV5, the weekly series Ate ng Ate Ko.
She also did a guest appearance in TV5’s noontime show, Sunday Noontime Live.
Months later, in November 2020, Kris signed a management contract with Cornerstone Entertainment headed by Erickson Raymundo.
Bea Alonzo decided to leave Star Magic after 19 years with the ABS-CBN’s talent-management arm.
On November 23, 2020, PEP.ph published the scoop about Bea's new career handler, the veteran talent manager Shirley Kuan.
On November 26, 2020, ABS confirmed in a statement that Bea had signed out of Star Magic but would remain a Kapamilya.
One of Bea’s first projects after leaving Star Magic is a movie with Alden Richards, produced by VIVA Films.
Bea is also set to reunite with John Lloyd Cruz in a movie titled No Goodbyes.
On September 30, 2020, Julia Barretto left Star Magic for a five-year management contract with VIVA Artists Agency.
Julia admitted that the retirement of Star Magic head Mariole Alberto played a big part in her decision to transfer to Viva's talent-management arm.
Effective January 1, 2021, Laurenti M. Dyogi will head Star Magic, succeeding Alberto.
Before her departure from Star Magic, Julia was supposed to lead the cast of the drama series Cara Y Cruz.
She was replaced by Heaven Peralejo in the series that is now titled Bagong Umaga.
Diego Loyzaga returned to showbiz in July 2020 after a two-year hiatus and was present at the press conference of Lockdown Portraits, Star Magic’s catalogue for 2020.
However, after a month, on August 12, 2020, Diego signed with VIVA Artists Agency.
One of Diego’s first projects with VIVA is a movie with AJ Raval, the daughter of action star Jeric Raval.
McCoy De Leon left Star Magic in August 2020, after signing a management contract with VIVA Artists Agency.
However, McCoy remains to be part of ABS-CBN’s prime-time series Walang Hanggang Paalam.
He has also been seen in the VIVA-produced shows for TV5: Kagat ng Dilim and Ghost Adventures.
