4 dead, at least 10 injured after Birmingham nightclub shooting

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a quadruple homicide investigation after multiple people were shot at a nightclub Saturday night.

According to BPD, officers arrived to a nightclub in the 3400 block of 27th Street North around 11:08 p.m. on reports of multiple people shot. Upon arrival, officers located multiple gunshot victims. Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene and pronounced Stevie McGhee, 39, of Birmingham, who was located on a sidewalk near the nightclub, dead. BFRS pronounced Markeisha Gettings, 42, of Birmingham and Angela Weatherspoon, 56, of Center Point, who they found inside, dead.

Multiple gunshot victims began arriving at UAB Hospital either by BFRS personnel or by private vehicle. UAB Hospital staff pronounced Lerandus Anderson, 24, of Center Point, dead. There are at least 10 additional gunshot victims receiving treatment at UAB. Their injuries range from stable to critical condition.

Preliminary investigation suggests there was a birthday party being held inside the nightclub and an altercation later ensued. After the altercation, at least one suspect fired shots from the street into the nightclub. Detectives are working to determine if the shooting stemmed from the altercation.

No one is in custody at this time. Federal agencies are assisting BPD with the investigation. Anyone with information can contact BPD at 205-254-1764. Birmingham police created an evidence submission portal for information on the quadruple homicide plus the triple homicide from Saturday evening. The link can be accessed by clicking here.

A lot of innocent people were shot and killed yesterday. Many others wounded.

The Birmingham Police Department and our federal partners have one priority right now -- hunt these @#$% down who committed these heinous acts.

We need swift justice for the victims and their families.

The shooter/shooters deserve no safe harbor from their own family, friends, or strangers. Do not protect them.

BPD's investigation is better off with credible information from the community that will lead to their capture and arrest. There is always someone who knows something.

Pick up the phone now and make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at (205) 254-7777.

-Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin

I am heartbroken this morning.  Birmingham has experienced an appallingly violent 24 hours, and I, like many in our City, feel grief-stricken.  We've said it too many times: these acts of violence are senseless.  They must stop.  We cannot become desensitized to this public health crisis.  We all want--and envision--so much more for our City.

As Chair of Public Safety, I've also said this many times:  we can't police our way out this.  We need everyone's help and commitment -- from our neighborhood leaders, our churches, our businesses, elected officials -- everyone has a part to play.  We all have to work together to make the changes that we so desperately need in our communities.

The victims of these violent acts deserve swift justice.  If you know anything that can help police, please be part of the effort to make a positive change in Birmingham; report what you know.

To all of those impacted by the violence that erupted in the last 24 hours, we mourn with you.  We also stand with you in the belief that Birmingham deserves more, and we will continue to fight for that vision for our future.

- Public Safety Chair Councilor LaTonya Tate, District 9
