Details of Nolanville stabbing death released

Nolanville, Tx (FOX 44) - UPDATE: Court papers paint a detailed picture of what happened in a Nolanville home Monday, leading to the stabbing death of Devin Ellis.

Nolanville Police Chief Michael Hatton earlier reported that officers were sent to a location in the 200 block of West Dogwood Street at 8:38 p.m. Monday, when a stabbing was reported. Officers arriving provided assistance to the victim until paramedics arrived, and he was taken to the hospital. The victim, identified as Ellis, later died.

Chief Hatton said the suspect in the stabbing was early on identified as Ernesto Leonardo Hernandez-Vargas, who turned himself in at the Temple Police Department a short time later.

An arrest affidavit filed in the case provides the details of what led to the victim's violent death.

The affidavit identified the suspect as the father of a child of the woman who lived in the residence and the victim as her current boyfriend.

The affidavit stated that when officers arrived, they found the front door to the residence was kicked in, and a woman holding a cloth to the chest of the victim who was lying on the ground. The affidavit stated that the woman told police the father of her child kicked in the door and stabbed the victim. The affidavit further stated that when officers went to the hospital, they discovered that the victim sustained multiple wounds to his heart from being stabbed.

The affidavit stated that Hernandez-Vargas waived his rights after turning himself in and gave a statement about what happened. The affidavit stated that during his interview, the suspect said he arrived at his ex-girlfriend's residence and kicked in the door, upset that she was with her current boyfriend.

The affidavit quoted him as saying he became angry and stabbed his ex-girlfriend's current boyfriend several times before leaving. The affidavit stated that he indicated he knew he was not invited there, and acknowledged that he kicked in the door to gain entrance. He told police the knife used in the stabbing was in his vehicle.

Hernandez-Vargas remained in the Bell County Jail on Friday, being held on murder and other lesser charges. His bond set at a total of $1,010,000.
