Malaking hamon ang binitawan ni Supreme Court (SC) Senior Associate Justice Marvic Leonen sa mga tax law practitioner para labanan ang korapsiyon sa bansa.
Sa kanyang pagdalo sa 1st International Tax Summit na ginanap sa Shangri-La Hotel sa Makati City, ipinahayag ni Leonen na umiiral ang korapsiyon sa sistema ng pagbubuwis sa bansa.
“[O]ur system of taxation is imperfect. It is intricate, constantly changing and coded in a language that borders on the arcane, even for lawyers,” ayon kay Leonen.
“While our laws must enable systems to continue to ensure the continued existence through a constant revenue stream, the levy, monitoring, and collection of taxes should be just. Efficiency should not sacrifice fairness as well as social justice,” wika pa ng mahistrado.
Binanggit ni Leonen na mahalagang repasuhin lagi ang paggamit ng prescriptive period para sa mga kasong may kinalaman sa buwis.
Binigyang-diin ni Leonen na sumasablay ang tax system ng bansa dahil sa korapsiyon sa gobyerno.
“The government is for the people. It is not there to satiate the greed of the powerful. Corruption, in any shape, way or form, should have no place in your work,” hamon pa ni Leonen sa mga abogado. (Prince Golez)
