Georgia funeral home manager faces 17 counts of abuse of dead body

COFFEE COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) – The manager of a funeral home in Coffee County has been arrested after 18 bodies were found there Saturday in various stages of decomposition.

Chris Johnson, 39, manager of the Johnson Funeral Home, faces 17 counts of abuse of dead body, according to state and local officials.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that deputies with the Coffee County Sheriff's Office found the 18 bodies stored improperly, including "more than one child," as well as a dog and cat.

The discovery was made as deputies were executing an eviction notice.

"The investigation remains active and ongoing, with additional charges anticipated as authorities continue to gather evidence and conduct thorough inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the deceased individuals," the Coffee County Sheriff's Office stated.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was called in to help the sheriff's office with the case.
