Muscogee County Sheriff to debut GPS tracker band at 'Autism Family Fun Day' event

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — The Muscogee County Sheriff's Office is working hard to bring awareness and resources to the Autism community this April.

MCSD is hosting a Family Fun Day at Woodruff Park on Saturday, April 12. The event will feature free food, games, bouncy houses, vendors and community resources for families dealing with autism.

According to the sheriff’s office, the event will be sensory-friendly.

“You don’t want to miss it,” Cpt. Larry Marshall said. “It doesn’t matter whether you have a child with autism or down syndrome or any other thing. We just want you to come out and enjoy and be a part of this day. It’s something the sheriff felt was a great need for the community."

In addition to the fun day events, the sheriff’s office will be unveiling their new Project Lifesaver GPS Tracking Bands and Autism Awareness cruisers.

“It is a search and rescue program. And it’s used for tracking children as well as adults who tend to wander off or elope.” Said Cpt. Marshall. “The sheriff has invested over $30,000 and a new GPS in addition to the radio one we already have. It will allow deputies to log into the app and find children with down syndrome and autism. The settings and parameters can be set and can be tracked nationwide.”

The sheriff’s office says the new bands are already in effect. People who are interested just need to contact the office at muscosheriff@columbusga.org or call at (706) 653-4225.
