Balikwas ang nasa radar ni Mark Belmonte, katropa sa defending champion University of the Philippines pagsagupa sa Adamson University 88th UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament prelims Day 3 ngayong Miyerkoles sa UST Quadricentennial Pavilion Arena.

Kinapos ang pagsisikap ni Belmonte at Fighting Maroons sa unang laban, sorpresang tumilapon sa host University of Santo Tomas noong Linggo, 87-67.

Nagsalpak si Belmonte ng 12 points, 4 rebounds, at 1 assist habang sumaklolo din sina Harold Alarcon at Jacob Bayla na mga umiskor ng tig-11.

Nadiyeta ang inaasahang si Rey Remogat na sumabak sa kanyang unang laro sa liga para sa State U sa limang puntos lang sa 10 minutong salang, isa sa haharurot sa alas-4:00 nang hapong pakikipagbuno ng Diliman-based squad sa atat ding bumuwelta sa talo na Adamson University.

Iyon ang pinakamasaklap na taob sa opening-weekend ng Peyips sa 11 taon, tumuldok din siyam na sunod ng Growling Tigers sa kanila sa rematch ng Final Four ng dalawa noong isang taon.

“Every game, our goal is always to win. Of course, this isn’t the kind of start we wanted, but we need to deal with the next challenge. That’s how it goes,” giit ni Maroons coach Goldwyn Monteverde. “Life goes on. After this loss, there are more games ahead, and we need to prepare well despite the short turnaround. We won’t dwell on the frustration; what matters is our preparation for the next game. That’s life- you move forward.”
