Nais ni Senador Win Gatchalian na mapanatili ang mas mataas na budgetary support upang mapabilis ang programang modernisasyon ng Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) at mapalakas ang external defense posture ng bansa.
Bilang chairperson ng Senate Committee on Finance, itinulak ni Gatchalian ang karagdagang P20 bilyon para sa AFP modernization fund sa ilalim ng Programmed Appropriations, bukod pa sa P30 bilyong nakapaloob sa Unprogrammed Appropriations.
“Ito ‘yung modernization fund na gagamitin sa pagbili ng mga kagamitan na tutulong sa atin sa pag-shift sa multi-domain external defense posture mula sa internal security strategy,” paliwanag ni Gatchalian sa deliberasyon sa panukalang 2026 budget ng Department of National Defense.
“Dapat na sumasalamin ang AFP modernization program sa kasalukuyang mga nangyayari sa bansa ngayon, halimbawa ang geopolitical situation sa West Philippine Sea,” ayon sa senador.
Sa Senate version ng panukalang national budget para sa susunod na taon, naglaan ng P385.97 bilyon, o 1.25% ng Gross Domestic Product para sa Defense Department.
