Paws Humane Society negotiates taking over Columbus Animal Care and Control Center

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Columbus City Manager Isaiah Hugley gave an update on negotiations for Paws Humane Society to take over management of Columbus Animal Care and Control Center at Tuesday’s City Council Meeting.

Negotiations also include the transfer of personnel. However, those who would like to be employed by Paws Humane Society would have to apply and be accepted for employment.   District 10 Councilor Travis Chambers was concerned about the displacement of employees.

Columbus City Manager Isaiah Hugley says those not hired by Paws Humane Society will have an opportunity to fill vacancies in the cities Public Works.

“Our goal is to place them. They need to be a good fit for where we’re going to place place them, But we’ve got jobs and our goalie to place them. If for some reason they’re not interested in the position that is available at public works and they want to look in other departments, they’ll have to apply within that department and they will have to go through the interview process and be hired.”
— Isaiah Hugley, Columbus City Manager

Negotiations for Paws Humane Society include the transfer of current animal control, buildings and equipment, programs, and budget.

Hugley says the agreed negotiated budget is $3,292,536.

Public hearings will be conducted and another presentation will be brought back to council Jan. 7 to adopt the agreement to transfer all Columbus Animal Care and Control operations to Paw’s Human Society.

The transfer of management will be effective no later than Feb. 1.
