'She is just a terrible person': Murder victim's friends react to accused killer's exclusive interview

PRICHARD, Ala. (WKRG) — Friends of a murder victim placed flowers at the scene of the crime Wednesday — a week after he was killed.

They spoke exclusively with News 5 after the accused killer spoke on Monday.

"It's literally like a movie," Lazarus Tanksley's lifelong friend Kendrick Allen said. "Nobody woke up and thought that Larry would be murdered."

According to Mobile County deputies, Lazarus' wife, Genesis Tanksley, showed up at his house, they got into an argument and then she shot him to death before dropping him off at the hospital.

Friends of Lazarus told News 5 that the couple was not together, and they lived in different houses.

However, Genesis told News 5 that they were together but were not allowed to live in the same house. She could not give a clear answer when asked why.

“She is just a terrible person that’s all I'm going to say,” Lazarus' lifelong friend Devante Burden said.

Genesis claims she is innocent and another man killed her husband.

"I have never seen him in Prichard; he was just out there just hanging out, and then he is going to jump into our conversation that’s weird I knew it," Genesis said. "Then he had a gun on him, and then he is going to shoot like that so fast, and then he died after being shot once."

Friends of Lazarus said the relationship between the two had been strained for some time.

"Outside looking in, every relationship has its ups and downs," Allen said. "But it was like a six-flag rollercoaster."

Allen and Burden accused Genesis of years of harassment toward Lazarus including stalking, busting out his windows and slashing his tires.

They said his New Year's Eve plans did not include seeing Genesis.

"He was at one of our other friends' dads' houses celebrating the New Year, came home, and she was here," Burden said. "Then everything went down."

The lifelong friends were shocked at their friend's death but not surprised that Genesis was accused of his murder.

“You can’t get out of this one," Burden said. "You can’t cause everything she was saying wasn’t making sense."

Genesis will be back in court on Jan. 16 for a preliminary hearing.
